Learning, Teaching, Research and Knowledge Exchange
Researcher Development Programme
The Graduate School and the Research and Enterprise Development Centre (RED) offer a rich Researcher Development Programme for researchers and those engaged in knowledge exchange activities. This supports the on-going acquisition of discipline-specific research expertise with a range of broader interpersonal, reflexive, critical thinking and project management skills.
The workshops offer the opportunity to develop a broad awareness, understanding and critical appreciation of the skills necessary for successfully carrying out a research project. These include research design, methodology and theory, data collection, analysis and interpretation, research publication activity, public engagement, effective research funding applications, and academic career management skills. The workshops also provide an excellent opportunity to network with fellow researchers and become part of a broader, vibrant research community and culture at the university.
All aspects of the Programme aim to support and enhance personal, professional and career skills across all four of the domains identified by the Researcher Development Framework (RDF) (see diagram). These four domains encompass the knowledge, intellectual abilities, techniques and professional standards for research, as well as the personal qualities, knowledge and skills to work with others and ensure the wider impact of research (see diagram).
The Professional Development Planner linked to the framework can be accessed at:
www.vitae.ac.uk/researchers/428241/ Researcher-Development-Framework.html
This tool has been designed (as an aid) to help you capture the maximum benefit from the RDF and plan your professional and career development.
You can use the RDF and the associated Professional Development Planner to:
• aid self-reflection and set aspirational goals • choose the most appropriate formal and informal development
• prepare for reviews, appraisals and career development conversations
• consider how your skills and experiences will enhance your career prospects
• highlight and evidence the transferability of your skills in CVs and job applications.
