Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (HE) (New Academic Staff) What is the PGCLT?
What support is there?
A postgraduate certificate in HE Learning and Teaching aimed at in-service Academic staff who are new to HE. It carries 60 credits at level 4 Masters level.
Who is it for?
• All new Academic staff with less than 3 years full time experience, on contracts of 0.5 or above. For those with less than one-year’s UK HE teaching experience it is a compulsory requirement to undertake the programme.
What are the entry requirements?
All candidates should have a degree or equivalent level of qualification.
What does it cover?
• 2 core modules – Introduction to Learning and Teaching – Curriculum, Assessment and QA in HE
• 2 optional modules from a choice of 4 – Enhancing Pedagogic Practice
– Supporting Students and Guidance – Dissertation Supervision and Guidance – Contextualising HE
• Pedagogic study - participants investigate an issue of direct concern to their practice.
N.B. there is also a dedicated Nursing and Midwifery pathway for Academic staff who are seeking dual professional status with the NMC and the HEA.
How do I apply?
• For some new staff, undertaking the programme may be a condition of their appointment
• For others, discuss participation with Head of Department and then make an application.

• Programme Tutor to assist with assessment and monitor progress
• Programme Mentor to assist with identification of discipline specific issues and to undertake observations and reviews of
teaching.
Length of course? Can be studied over one or two years.
When does it run? 4.30pm - 7.30pm every Wednesday (if completing in 1 year); every other Wednesday for completion in 2 years.
