INSPIRE ART AT KINGS

Not only is the charming Kings Arms in Christchurch producing beautiful food in their kitchens (see our review in Eating Out), they are also adorning their walls with a variety of gorgeous art. Something for your palate and something from the pallet!

Established local art group Christchurch Arts Guild are holding a major exhibition of paintings from 01 September through to January 2013 in the light and airy hotel lounge. It really is refreshing to see paintings of local scenes by local artists, instead of mass-produced generic prints

on a hotel wall.

Each month this display will be refreshed with a new selection of works featuring traditional, abstract, impressionist and contemporary paintings. The Christchurch Arts Guild is now in its 64th year and the members have gained an enviable reputation for the high standard of work they produce.

Weaving isn’t just for baskets or tapestries. In the Thick of it: A Woven Space, is an exhibition by artist, Laura Ellen Bacon. Held in The Gallery at The Winchester Discovery Centre this is weaving on a huge scale. The display consists of two pod-like

forms, created from an outer layer of swathes of tree branches, collected from the County Council’s Netley Common Local Nature Reserve, and an inner layer made from willow. Inspired by nest-like spaces and semi- architectural forms, Bacon’s pieces are woven with only natural materials and

span metres long in length – this latest structure reaching the full height of The Gallery!

Visitors can wander around and inside the woven structure and immerse themselves within the natural materials and experience a ‘nest-like’ impression. Laura was accompanied by five volunteer weavers and the piece took almost two weeks to create.
