Over the past 20 years, BETTER BUSINESS has spoken to dozens of business owners and start ups about the ups and downs of running their own business. We decided to get in touch with some of them to find out where they are now.

TIM CAMPBELLMBE, the Bright Ideas Trust

years after he had won the first series of The Apprentice and he had just left his six-figure job at Amstrad with Sir Alan’s blessing in order to concentrate on setting up the Bright Ideas Trust. The charity supports young Londoners who aren’t in employment, education or training – so-called ‘NEETS’ – by helping them start up in business. Since then, it has supported around


30 start ups, and become one of the most recognised brands in the charitable investment sector, with corporate support from partners including Accenture and the Bank of America. But that isn’t all he’s been up to; earlier

entrepreneurial sector more widely: “Less funding and greater need has created the perfect storm,” says Tim, who attributes the Trust’s survival to the “credible, hard-wearing partners” who support its investment work. “Public sector funding has changed forever; the money just isn’t there. However, that means that those who identify a need must be more entrepreneurial than ever.” In 2011, Tim resigned from his post as CEO of the Trust, handing over to Lisa Gagliani whom he now supports from his new role as chairman of the board. One thing he says he would do differently if he had his time again is to appoint a chief executive at an earlier stage; when it was pointed out that in his 2005 Better Business interview he said that trying to do every- thing themselves was one of the most
