I – Input Versus Output CPD

So what does this mean for you in English. It means you have two possible ways of achieving or completing your CPD requirements.

The traditional input method of completing your cpd requirements involves doing a prescribed minimum number of hours of development. Often members find doing courses with stated hours a reassuring way of achieving their CPD requirements. The key to selecting any training course or seminar is that the topic is relevant and appropriate to your current career.

NB. Regardless of promises of CPD hours made by any provider of CPD courses, if the course or seminar is not relevant to you it is not CPD for you.

If you do adopt this method you need to complete at least 20 hours structured and 50 hours unstructured.

If you work in practice you

will need to achieve a minimum of 10 hours in each regulated service area in which you practice; audit and accounting, tax, insolvency and investment business.

The output method requires members to demonstrate that they maintain their competence by measuring the outcomes achieved after learning. So what does this mean I hear you ask?

Well after much consideration we felt the best way to demonstrate this was to get a Chartered Accountant to share their story with you. Owen Hurley ACA is a member in business and his story can be found on page 11 towards the back of this brochure. Owen has even shared part of his CPD record (edited of course) with you.

As Owen clearly demonstrates, the key feature is not completing a prescribed number of hours. It is showing that you have thought long and hard about your own specific needs and followed through on developing them. In a nutshell, what did you get “out” of your CPD, not how many hours you put”in”.
