Aspy in our midst!

A few months back, Sunbury resident Colin was watching a BBC programme about leading spies in the second world war. He sat bolt upright as he recognised a face. Colin lived in Thames Street as a boy and attended primary school at what is now Springfield. He took the bus to school with two little girls who lived a few doors up. His mum used to babysit for the girls occasionally so knew the family well. The father was a tall, good looking man, with a preened moustache. Colin knew him as a lecturer. What had made Colin sit bolt upright is that this man, Francis Cammaerts, the neighbour in Thames Street, was also a spy. He was the son of Emile Cammaerts, a Belgian, also involved in the resistance in the first world war. Francis himself was one of the most remarkable members of the wartime Special Operations Ex- ecutive. He set up a resistance organisation of 10,000 fighters which severely hampered Ger- man troop movements and played an important role in the invasion of southern France. He was known amongst the resistance fighters as “le grand diable Anglais” - the big English devil!
