As the ageing male bastions of the ancien régime take their final encore and go to that great auditorium in the sky, this might just be the time for more young women to apply for a place in conducting school and to be taken seriously as potential symphony conductors. Only time and the conducting list for future Proms will tell.


In the meantime, step up to the podium one of the rare British ground- breakers: Professor Jane Glover DPhil, FRCM, CBE; currently Director of Opera at the Royal


Academy of Music and also Music Director of Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. It is now over 20 years since Glover conducted the London Mozart Players using modern (non-period) instruments in recordings of Mozart’s late symphonies on the ASV label. These digital recordings were critically welcomed at the time and the three CDs that have been donated to TASS include Symphonies 25- 30, 32-35 and 39.
