Calstock Jazz & Blues Festival 26th – 28th October

A collective of dedicated music lovers in and around the Tamar Valley will break fascinating new ground at the end of October, with the launch of Calstock’s first-ever jazz festival. The village is already known locally for its distinct musical microclimate; it was described in the Guardian Weekend magazine recently as “the hippy-dippy capital of the valley with a mix of the very affluent and the extremely not”. It’s not unusual for two or three gigs to compete for attention in the one village on the same night, but often the emphasis has been on rock or folk. The inaugural Calstock Jazz and Blues Festival is set to put a distinctly new musical spin on things. The volunteers who have put the

Clare Teal

festival together have achieved some significant coups despite the fact that this is their first venture. Just about every conceivable live music venue in the

village - including the church - will come alive over the weekend of 26th – 28th October. Major figures from the UK jazz world will perform. Head- liners include Clare Teal, who’s twice been named British Jazz singer of the Year and is a regular presenter on BBC Radio Two. And drummer Clark Tracey will close the festival, performing with a brand-new quintet. A tricky grant funding climate has been another challenge, but the organisers have managed to secure a grant of £6,530 from FEAST, a partnership between Arts Council England and Cornwall Council. And closer to home Calstock Parish Council is pledging £250 for “Junk Jazz”, a programme of percussion workshops for young people in the area.

Tickets for the main shows are selling fast. Full details are at www.calstockjazzfestival.co.uk or by phone from Calstock Arts on 01822 833183.
