GOLDEN SUMMER FOR UK


The 2012 Olympics were without doubt a triumph for the nation. Not only did Team GB athletes win record numbers of medals, including the highest number of golds yet, the event was spectacular from start to finish. The opening ceremony designed by Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle was a ‘tour de force’ that had everyone in amazement and set the tone for the Games. The closing ceremony was equally stun- ning, with performances by some of the best known names in British music. As our Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Britain delivered”.


The venues were spectacular, the volunteer Games Makers friendly and helpful, warnings about security and transport chaos proved unfounded and generally it was an occasion that lifted the mood of the entire nation. Britain’s reputation in the eyes of the world was improved immeasurably. There was praise about the organisation of the Games from all quarters, and the level of interest in sport generally was raised. There is likely to be a big spin-off ben- efit for the Paralympic Games with reports of a ticket rush for these Games, which are traditionally hard to sell.
