GROWING YOUR OWN CURRY


Britain could soon be producing all of its own curry ingre- dients, according to The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Farmers and kitchens across the UK are already growing their own potatoes, onions, garlic and tomato but the department suggested that the spices and herbs– the majority of which we import – are equally achievable. This initiative should ultimately decrease the Indian restaurant industry’s carbon footprint.


Home gardeners are increasingly taking to growing their own chilli plants and chickpeas, the latter being very similar to dwarf peas in the way they are looked after. However, we are yet to see these grown commercially in the UK as no seed varieties have been developed.


It may be too late to grow your own chickpeas this year but there is still time to plant some coriander, a herb which is beginning to be produced commercially in Britain. And it only takes six weeks for fenugreek to produce a healthy crop of spicy leaves. For those looking to make an investment in their garden, ordering saffron crocuses now could find you produc- ing the most expensive spice in the world for years to come.
