elcome to the inaugural issue of Building T

est News, a bi-monthly magazine dedicated

to the testing, research and certification of building materials and products. Building T

est News is the first

publication of its kind to offer insight into this complex industry by bringing our readers the latest news, exclusive articles, case studies and site reports from industry leaders as well as research and testing institutes.

Working closely with partners such as

Fraunhofer, EMPA and BRE, Building Test News has been granted sneak previews of all the latest industry developments and innovations. The editorial team has spent the

past few months reaching out to key manufacturers and suppliers of building materials and products, as well as testing laboratories, construction contractors,

architects and engineers, with the aim of creating a single source for the building test community. Our aim is for Building T

est News to become the industry

reference point. I am also delighted to announce the

launch of our sister event, Building Test Expo, which takes place in Cologne, Germany in June 2013. This international exhibition and symposium promotes increased innovation, quality, safety and sustainability in buildings and building materials, through improved and advanced testing technologies and processes. Visit www.buildingtestexpo. com for more information. In this first issue of Building Test News

we have provided a brief introduction to the core industry sectors and key research organisations. Peter Bonfield, CEO of BRE, discusses how bridging the gap between government and

commercial activities has allowed the institute to flourish (p6), while leading Swiss research institute EMPA takes a materials-testing perspective and showcases a preservative-free wood adhesive (p10). Keighley Laboratories’ one-stop testing shop discovers an all-round solution for testing materials (p46), and for the socially minded, our Around the web section dives into the Twittersphere to find out what has been testing your mind of late (p19).

I would like to take this opportunity to invite your feedback on Building T
