Meet experts from the crafting world and
discover an Aladdin's cave of creative crafting supplies from over 150 exhibitors from across the region and UK, with the very latest products, ideas and innovations.
Be transported to a bygone era with a selection of stunning costumes from some of the most famous television and film adaptations of Jane Austen’s beloved novels. Each outfit depicts the changing fashions of the time and showcases the exquisite needlework and complex craftsmanship that went into their design.
With the star-studded collection including costumes from BBC’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’, starring Colin Firth; the Oscar winning film ‘Sense and Sensibility,’ featuring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet; plus the wonderful ‘Emma’, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, this is a fantastic opportunity to see exactly what goes in to the creation of some of the most iconic outfits
in costume drama.
Devon based Ruth and Belinda will be in the Knitting Lounge bringing their knitting census to the West Country for visitors to the show to add to this fantastic project.
Launched at the start of spring in March 2012, Knitting for the Record asks hand knitters to create a cream square and attach their anecdotes and musings onto a tag to add to a huge structure that will act as a living document of ‘the knitter’s voice.’ If you can’t knit, don’t panic as there will be lots of volunteers on hand to help you join in the fun!
If you’ve got excited by the growing trend for ‘Make do and Mend’ but don’t know where to start, or want to return to sewing and need a confidence boost, then make sure you visit the fantastic Sewing Hub!
Overcome your fear of sewing machines at the Sewing Machine Clinic where you can take part in mini-workshops focusing on basic sewing techniques, and with this new found confidence you can then pop along to the brand new Dressmakers’ Pattern Bar to peruse all the latest patterns and get advice from our very own Dressmaking Advisor.
Make sure you visit the Fabric Manipulation exhibition where you can explore the innovative ways cloth can be manipulated to form new shapes and dimensions. With examples of traditional smocking found on 18th century workwear, haute couture garments or intricate Japanese 'shibori' technique, fabric has been gathered, pleated and stitched in various forms
for centuries – rather like fabric origami! Help to celebrate the best of British with the
brand new Glimpses of Blighty display. This exciting embroidery display will showcase the best entries from the latest Madeira competition. With everything from Routemaster buses, Mini Coopers and Mary Quant, to red telephone boxes, the sunny seaside and afternoon tea, this will be a display that will leave you feeling proud to be British!

WHEN you contact Samaritans what ever you say goes no further. If you face a problem and you don’t have anyone to share what is on your mind think about picking up the phone, emailing or calling in to meet us. It helps to talk something through.
Problems and issues can take you by surprise, or they can
build over time either way they can become a burden which really weighs you down. Samaritans recognize that some problems are sometimes very difficult to think about let alone to talk through with a complete stranger. That’s why we are friendly and also careful to not judge what people tell us. We also recognize that if you are young you might be facing something for the first time, and that something could be anything; family problems such as divorce, abuse or alcoholism, embarrassing things like sexually transmitted diseases, and things which may split the group of friends, betrayals and relationship breakdowns. If you have something on your mind who can you talk to? You can phone on 01803 299999, write an email or text us at anytime. It’s probably worth just explaining who Samaritans are. Whilst
you might think that there is a religious theme to what we do there is no religious agenda at all. Many people also automatically connect Samaritans with ‘help for people who are suicidal’ and whilst this connection is sometimes the right one most of those who contact us do for emotional support in a time of need. All sorts of people with all sorts of problems. As to the volunteers you can speak to, Samaritans are all unpaid volunteers who hope to help others by giving people time
to talk through any problem or issue and you can contact us around the clock, we man the phones every minute of every day. If you want to speak to someone face to face all you have to do is to call into your local branch. South Devon’s branch is in Torquay, at 21 Warren Road where you will be very welcome to sit and talk to a volunteer in a quiet room, just the two of you. Torquay branch Director Robert says: ‘We try to make sure that its clear to young people that the Samaritans offer support to them as much if not more than older people. Young people have issues and problems and some don’t feel they have anyone to turn to who will listen and won’t judge them in some way,’ adding ‘we don’t pass on anything we are told, absolutely nothing and you don’t even have to tell us your name.’ If you are reading this you or someone you know might consider helping us to help others. If you would like to find out how you help just contact us. We would love to hear from you because we always need help to keep going. Do you need any special training or background? the answer is a big NO. Robert adds: ‘Many people think you have to be special to be a Samaritan, you don’t really, We don’t look for volunteers of a particular type or age, we are all ordinary people who come from a wide range of backgrounds. The one key thing we have in common is the wish to help people in need by lending an ear and give a little time for them to talk.’ The Torquay branch is open and helping people seven days a week, 24 hours each day. ‘It’s a team effort to make sure that if someone needs help we are here for them,’ says Robert. ‘If you do want to find out more just call us, we would love to hear from you.’
Every few months (contact us by the next joining day 15 September 2012)
the Torquay branch welcomes a new group of volunteers so recruitment is always ongoing. ‘You ask anyone in our friendly branch,’ says Robert. ‘being a Samaritan
volunteer can be challenging but also very rewarding. If you are reading this and can spare some time please think of helping us help others.’ Please phone or write to the Recruitment Secretary, Samaritans of South
