Outer Mongolia is the largest horse cul-

ture on the planet. Terry, my wife and an avid photographer, and I wanted to immerse ourselves in the people: their culture and their animals. Our trip broadened from simply taking in the images of the free wild horses to include participating in their annual Nadaam Festival where the heritage of the horse is the centerpiece of the celebration. Likewise, we wanted to live and eat with the nomadic tribes that moved their Ger homes four times a year along with their herds of horses, goats, sheep, cattle, even yaks. The only way we could do that would be to trek across the plains and steppes on horseback and live as the nomads do. That was our plan and we earmarked the month of July 2012 to make it all happen.

Traveling internationally with my wife is always great sport. Terry is my

best friend and it seems quirky adventures follow us wherever we go. Life is good: rich and full. How- ever, set aside all the tourist attractions, the pageantry of festivals and the roars of crowds at races, this trip boiled down to senses that awakened and grew within us. We both nurtured those feelings and gave them weeks to blossom.
