The BTHA and TRA have announced changes to the 2012 Toy Industry Awards, which incorporates both the Toy of the Year Awards and the Toy Retailer of the Year Awards.

2013 will see the Toy Fair

mark its 60th anniversary. In celebration of this milestone, a dedicated area of the new Upper West Hall at Olympia has been secured to host the 2012 Toy Industry Awards with a brand new special event format. The annual gala event, taking place on 22nd January 2013, will allow for easy access by running alongside the 2013 exhibition. The format of the evening has been redesigned to incorporate a drinks reception with bowl food and canapés followed by an ‘Oscars style’ awards ceremony which will celebrate the best in toy retail and product for 2012. The 2012 Toy of the Year Awards for the UK and Ireland will once again provide the focus for excitement for suppliers attending the Industry Awards Dinner during the 60th Anniversary Toy Fair at Olympia. The supplier awards are organised by the Toy Retailers Association whose own history began with the formation of the National Association of Toy Retailers in 1950. The Top Toys are selected by a panel of retailers drawn from across the industry. Both nomination and selection are not limited to members of the Association and each year a comprehensive panel of experts will consider the Dream Toys (in the early Autumn) and then, at the turn of the year, the Annual Award Winners. The 2012 Toy Retailer of the Year Awards for the UK and

Ireland application process will open in late September with newly amended categories. Retailers can compete nationally in like-for-like categories and can apply in more than one category, if applicable. The BTHA has created an application process which will again allow for self-nomination, together with nominations coming from a panel of nationwide industry experts. The application process has been specifically designed to capture retailers’ key details whilst creating a simpler and more user-friendly application form.

BTHA and TRA Awards changes for 2012 / 2013

Sponsored by: LEGO courts controversy

Reports are circulating within the trade that LEGO plan to offer Series 8 of its Minifigures range to one major retailer one month ahead of the rest of the retail trade. Having already courted controversy amongst independent retailers earlier this year,

by offering several ranges to major retailers on an exclusive basis for a limited period, this latest move has been widely condemned by specialist toy retailers, and is likely to reignite the debate over the fairness of this kind of strategy. Typical of the responses Toy World received from independent retailers was the

reply from Nicky Tossell, manager of Youings Toy Shop in Devon, who said: “It’s totally unfair to small independent toy shops. I’ve been in the toy trade for nearly 25 years and see this happening a lot. As independents we should make ourselves heard and stand together with the help of the trade press, and the support of Toymaster.” Another independent retailer tweeted that it’s “a touchy subject...me and an army of 500 other independents may start protesting soon”. One industry commentator, who wished to remain anonymous, commented:

“Specialist toy stores, which stock a full range of toys, 365 days a year, believe that there should be a level playing field and, ideally, everyone should be treated the same. Clearly, exclusives are part of the toy landscape, but it seems particularly unusual to be doing it with a range such as Minifigures which are likely to be stocked by every toy retailer.” Toy World asked LEGO to comment, but at the time of going to press the company had not replied.

The first ever Slow Toy Awards open

The team behind the ‘Slow Toy’ movement has launched the first ever Slow Toy Awards.

The awards aim to highlight toys that provide children with more than noise and flashing lights. A panel of significant figures from the industry will endeavour to uncover ten toys that promote traditional play, encourage a child’s own imagination and are well made. The winners will get a badge of honour and be included in a prestigious top ten Christmas list to be promoted in the run-up to the festive season. To enter simply email the name of the brand, product, stockists, cost and why you feel it should be awarded a Slow Toy accolade to entries@slowtoymovement.com. The competition will close at midnight on 14th of September. For more information, visit www.slowtoymovement.com.
