Pensioners walk from Watford to Birmingham

Two adventurous pensioners have undertaken a challenging walk from Watford to Birmingham in aid of MAA!

63 year old Joyce and 67 year old Ray, decided to walk 115 miles because their son was involved in an almost fatal accident on the M6 Toll road, when a deer ran across the carriageway two years ago.

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity rescued Sam after he suffered life threatening injuries to his abdomen and chest. His pelvis was broken in two places, his left arm was broken, and he spent four weeks on a life support machine.

Joyce and Ray said; “It was Midlands Air Ambulance, both in procedures carried out at the site of the accident, and then with the speedy transfer to Selly Oak Hospital, which saved Sam’s life.”

To say thank you to the service, Joyce, a recently retired nurse, and Ray a Humanist Celebrant, walked along The Grand Union Canal towpath. They started at The Ironbridge Lock in Cassiobury Park, and fi nished eight days later at The Mailbox, Birmingham, where Sam now lives and works.

Sam joined his parents each day to walk a short distance, despite the accident causing liver damage, which will one day lead to him needing a transplant. Joyce and Ray stayed at B&B’s along the route covering all their own expenses so that all money donated would go to MAAC. The couple raised almost £3000!

All in a day’s work!

These cheeky frolics were all in the name of charity, as blushing staff joined in the fundraising efforts of Banks’s Brewery and entered the competition to fi nd Mr Banks’s 2013. The Wolverhampton based brewery organised a competition to create a 2013 calendar. It was a tough job but someone had to judge the pictures!

Lights, Camera, Action!
