Restless Minds: Sticks and stones consider

Sticks and stones May break my bones But words will never hurt me. This familiar children’s rhyme, dating

from 1872, tries to persuade victims of name-calling to ignore the taunt; to brush it off and let it have no effect. Yet in today’s world, suicide attributed to bullying, name- calling and other taunts, is all too common a story. Words can hurt. The Restless Minds discussion group will

look at the power of words when it begins its 2012-13 season on Tuesday, September 11, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Sewing Room of Oakwood’s Arts and Crafts Center. The topic was originally scheduled for May 2012, but that session had to be cancelled because of an unavoidable confl ict. Bobbie Reed will be the discussion leader. All people with open, inquisitive minds are

welcome. We will

the ways words

are used to bully others and to mobilize classmates to shun a student. We will look at the impact of verbal abuse in families. We will look at the ways words are

used to devalue and demonize those with different belief systems. We will look at how political rhetoric uses words to infl uence public opinion. We will discuss whether use of words in

these kinds of settings is guaranteed by the principle of free speech or whether other standards should be applied. For more information on Restless Minds

or the September program, call Bobbie Reed or Bill Gates at 480-883-7410. The discussion group meets on the

second Tuesday evening of each month, September through May. 
