Interview by Shireen Fenner

MUSIC

‘I used to go to church as much as I could before,’ he says, ‘of course now I find it a lot harder to find time, with being on the road and everything... It’s more of a spiritual thing now. It’s more of a way to keep myself grounded and away from negativity.’

SOLID FRIENDSHIPS Always In among the drama, but never really part of it, is a good way to describe Tyga. His affiliations often lead to difficult questions from the media, such as ‘Drake vs Common’, ‘Nicki vs Kim’ etc. And even during this interview, we get the distinct impression that Tyga doesn’t even enjoy interviews. Although he is very pleasant, it’s plain to see that he doesn’t like being embroiled and he doesn’t like the additional fuss that comes along with music (ie us lot, the press).

However, one elephant in the room that he is happy to speak about freely is his friendship with RnB star Chris Brown. Having worked together closely on several projects and currently rumoured to be planning a joint mixtape at some point in the near future, Chris and Tyga have formed a very solid bond. There are several YouTube videos where the pair joke and laugh like brothers. And he wants us all to know this.

‘Chris Brown is a super-talented dude,’ he affirms, ‘and I think this just proves people will believe the media before they believe an artist and his talent. I hang out with Chris a lot and most of the things you see in the media really just aren’t true, man. It’s like, when you get to a certain level, all you can do – and all he wants to do – is just make music and dance.

Chris is so talented and people need to look at that rather than what the media might tell you.’

Now he’s made that clear, one last thing synonymous with Tyga that we have to ask about is his love of body art. It is impossible to tell how many tattoos he has exactly and he doesn’t like to talk about them individually, deeming them ‘personal’, however, he assured us there is still plenty more work to be done.

‘[Laughs] Yeah, I got plenty of room left. Right now I’m just in the process of finishing stuff off – once you get something done you always want to make it better or update it, but later on... who knows?’
