Olney/Sandy Spring

Olney was established in the early 1800s as a community of artisans, traders and merchants. The charming town of Sandy Spring offers many wonderful examples of historic architecture, and has been designated as a Montgomery County Heritage Area.

The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring is the largest aerial forest adventure park in North America, and offers family fun for ages 5 and up. There are 13 separate courses of varying levels of difficulty. Each course has zip lines but primarily consist of “bridges” between tree platforms made of rope, cable and wood configurations creating over 150 unique challenges.

A 60-year tradition continues at the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts which originally opened in 1938 and was called by early playbills “The South’s First Professional Summer Theater.” Today, the theater is a professional award-winning regional theater in “arts-rich” Montgomery County that emphasizes 20th century American classics, new works and musical theater.

The Sandy Spring Museum offers a unique insight into the history of Sandy Spring and focuses on the town’s agrarian history. The facility offers interesting exhibits on town residents and their achievements in the fields of abolitionism, invention, the arts and the development of the locally originated Maryland State Police.
