West Valley light rail gets green light

View report

Valley Metro has been given the green light to start the design phase for a proposed $1.2 billion light-rail extension from downtown Phoenix to the West Valley. The go-ahead vote for the 11-mile transit line

was made July 25 by the Maricopa Association of Governments, or MAG, a regional planning agency. Plans call for a rail system that will extend west along Interstate 10 to a park-and-ride lot at 79th Avenue on the north side of the freeway, just east of Tolleson. Total funding has yet to be secured, but the goal is to complete the line by 2023, according to projections offered by Eileen Yazzie, a MAG transportation planning project manager.

The light-rail line will provide riders with an estimated 19-minute commute between the 79th Avenue lot and Central and Washington avenues in downtown Phoenix, Yazzie said. The average daily boardings have been estimated at 32,900 by 2030, she said.

The proposed line will connect with the existing 20-mile system between Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa that opened in 2008.
