Business Briefcase
Hi, you all, welcome to the Business Briefcase, or as some have called it, the Business Suitcase. You know, there’s nothing better than a reader approaching Mr. Briefcase and telling him, “Hey, I love your column, I read the suitcase all the time.” Hey, either works for Mr. Briefcase, or is that Mr. Suitcase? This week’s column name is in honor of these fans. Let’s begin this week’s
business items with a few closings to report in Goodyear at the Central Square Plaza, on the north side of Van Buren Street between Litchfield and Dysart roads.

Next door in Suite 103, Makola Market has closed, though another owner is trying to open up a similar store in the same spot in the near future. Owner Karl Peterson’s store specialized in African and Caribbean food supplies and began at 725 N. Central Ave., Suite 116, in Avondale in June 2009. It moved to the Goodyear location two years later. In the same plaza, Fresh 2 Def Barber Shop moved out of Suite 101 and went 50 yards east, buying the free- standing building at 13340 W. Van Buren St. in Goodyear. Owner and Avondale resident Marshall Knox, who has more than 15 years experience cutting hair, eventually will open up a barbershop school at his new site, Knox told Mr. Briefcase July 26. The 3,600-square-foot-building has a back room where the school will take place, for right now, “the ladies are doing hair” in that room, he said.
First up is Estrella Mountain Cyclery at 13370 W. Van Buren St., Suite 102. The business has vacated the premises, its website no longer works and its phone just rings for eternity.
larger building, the front of the barbershop has seven chairs, just one more than he had at the former spot. One unique thing about the business — besides the name, which stems from his association with the record label, Def Jam Recordings — is a V.I.P. service offered to Knox’s regular customers. Part of the pre-pay program includes having your car washed if you go in for a haircut on Saturday, Knox said. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment on Sunday and Monday. OK, heading back 50 yards west to the shopping plaza Knox left behind, we have a new business in between all those abandoned suites. LaNiña Fresa is at 13370 W. Van Buren St., Suite 102, in Goodyear. The store opened May 9 and offers a variety of desserts and snacks, including ice cream and raspados, or for those not in the know, such as Mr. Briefcase before speaking to the owner, shaved ice in a cup with fruit toppings.
The store is owned and operated by Laura Felipe and her husband, Daniel, each with a degree in business management. The duo decided to open up a business in order to get use out of their degrees. Laura was kind enough to explain a lot of the items she
serves to Mr. Briefcase since the majority of the menu is written in Spanish, college courses he barely survived. OK, let’s begin with the easy one; Blue Bunny Ice Cream is available in various flavors, such as Mr. Briefcase’s favorite, mint chocolate chip. Laura said many customers have asked her to get Thrifty Ice Cream and she is looking into it. Long-time readers of the Briefcase may recall Mr. Briefcase is a big fan of Thrifty Ice Cream, which always brings back memories of a simpler time for him when he was a wee lad in San Jose, Calif., with his only care being, ‘What sport will we play today in the street?’ Now his mind is constantly riddled with, ‘Is that
business new?’ ‘What store used to be there?’ and ‘Wait a minute, was that business closed?’ When you see a car slowly driving through a shopping center with a man

looking dazed and confused behind the wheel, don’t worry, it’s just Mr. Suitcase.
Back to LaNiña Fresa and raspados, shaved ice in a cup topped with one of 11 all-natural fruit and creamy syrups, such as coconut and strawberry. The store also makes fruit cocktails in two varieties, one just plain fruit, such as oranges, coconut, mangos, pineapple, cantaloupe, jicama and watermelon; and the other with sweeter fruits, such as bananas, strawberries, apples, as well as watermelon and pineapple, and topped with granola and honey. Another item available is called Churroloco, which is
served in a large drink cup with a layer of sweet and sour sauce at the bottom, followed by a layer of cucumber, Japanese-style peanuts, pork skin in vinegar and topped with cold clam juice. There are other versions as well, “You can always take in/take out” items, Laura said. Another popular dessert is the Magoneadas, which comes in a drink cup as well and has a layer of mango at the bottom, then a layer of shaved ice, followed by more mango and topped with chilies. Cocktail Corn is a favorite of customers, too, which
is shaved corn in a bowl with mayonnaise, butter and cheese. Then there are the snacks made with Tostitos chips, with such names as Tostilocos, Tostielote and Tostihuates, basically a bag of chips mixed together with such items as fruit, cheese and sour cream. Other desserts and snacks available include shakes, smoothies and cups of fresh fruit with cream. The restaurant, which seats about eight inside and four outside, also has free Wi-Fi.
Warehouse at 500 N. Bullard Ave., Suite C29, in Goodyear, changing its hours. The business deals with just about every aspect of a wedding, from having a florist on site to rentals, invitations, meetings with disc jockeys, you get the picture.
