Celebrating half a century of service to the Craft

50 Years a Mason In May, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master Philip Bullock visited Pleydell Lodge No 4687, to present a 50 year service Certificate of Achievement to W Bro Morston (Mark) Mervyn Fryer. W Bro Mark was initiated on 24th April 1962 and the photograph on the right shows a new made member of the Lodge, Bro Karl Leon Paul who was initiated on the 24th April 2012, with W Bro Mark and WBro R.F Pounder, Worshipful Master of Pleydell Lodge and W Bro Philip Bullock. “The evening was truly a most memorable experience - for all the right reasons. I thought what a contrast between the two brothers in terms of service” said Philip.

A tribute to 50 Years W Bro Dennis Simmons a member of St Edmund’s Lodge No 4714 was the recipient of a Certificate of Achievement for celebrating 50 years in Freemasonry, presented by W Bro Philip Bullock, Assistant Provincial Grand Master during the Installation Meeting held on Tuesday 22 May. In responding to his presentation, W Bro Simmons spoke eloquently of his attachment to Freemasonry and how the many friendships he had made sustained him during the years. The evening was a double celebration as W Bro Barry Cooper had the honour and privilege of Installing his successor W Bro Peter Morgan in the Chair of the Lodge. A wonderful evening culminated in a splendid supper attended by 75 members and visitors.

Celebrating the Masonic career of Bob Aitkenhead Major Robert Aitkenhead was Initiated in Lodge St Andrew No 524 Grand Lodge of Scotland on 27 February1962. With a military career Bob has joined Lodges at home and overseas as his postings were made.

On 21 December 1976 he became a joining member of the White Horse Lodge No 2227 in Westbury and soon became very busy as Director of Ceremonies and Preceptor of Lodge of Instruction – for a period of ten years. Twenty-five years ago in 1987 Bob organised the Centenary Celebration Meeting for White Horse Lodge attended by the PrGM John Ing. Bob’s support for Freemasonry was recognised in October 1981 with appointment to Provincial Grand Lodge in Wiltshire as PrAGDC. October 1986 saw promotion to PrSGW and in 1992 appointment as PrGDC – an office he held for eight years. In recognition of his considerable work for Freemasonry, over a number of years, Bob was appointed an Officer of the United Grand Lodge of England with the rank of PAGDC, in April 1989. Giving enthusiastic support to Freemasonry – not only through white Horse Lodge – but to Provincial Grand Lodge in particular, Bob’s dedication was brought to the attention of the Grand Master, Brother HRH The Duke of Kent – and in April 1999 he received a well deserved promotion within Grand Lodge to PJGD. In May, at an enthusiastic and well-supported meeting of White Horse Lodge, the Provincial Grand Master Francis Wakem had the opportunity of presenting Bob with the Provincial Grand Master’s Certificate of Achievement to mark his 50 years faithful service to Freemasonry. Bob is seen in the photograph with Provincial Officers and the Officers of White Horse Lodge to whom he generously donated a full set of new collars.
