As a result Grand Lodge has provided resources for a Conservation Grants Scheme, co-ordinated by the Library and Museum. Two tranches of funding have already been awarded but a third round of funding, with £2,500 available in total, is about to become available.

Details of the 2012 funding round will be announced after the summer recess. Lodges and Chapters are encouraged to apply for funding to improve record storage, re-box records in archive quality packaging, carry out a preservation survey, or to repair individual volumes. All Wiltshire Lodges and Chapters are eligible to apply for a sum of up to £250 - full details about the Scheme, with project examples and an application form will be made available in the autumn.

The fi rst two tranches of the Scheme has seen a welcome number of applications - feedback with encouraging guidance is provided to all, with successful applications including the repair of more recent as well as older volumes. In some cases several lodges and chapters have formed a consortium to apply for up to £1000 to improve storage facilities and shelving. Lodges or Chapters considering an application are welcome to seek further general advice from the Archives Team.

Anyone interested in researching their Lodge or Chapter history is encouraged to look out for the next Lodge, Locality and Livelihood: exploring Masonic Lodges and their local links workshop, following successful events in Manchester last autumn and at Surbiton in May.

A Masonic venue in the south west is under consideration to host the next event – look out for news about this free day!

On arrival at the Library and Museum of Freemasonry (above - they arrived stored and packed in all sorts of ways) erased Lodge and Chapter records are then re- packed into acid-free boxes (as seen below). Lodges and Chapters seeking to improve their records storage can apply for a Conservation Grant to obtain a supply of these boxes, which are suitable for storing archives.
