Havering Extra, Summer 2012 3
Welcome S
TREETpartiesand DiamondJubilee celebrations may be over but events across the borough and throughoutthe
capital have left memories to last alifetime. The Queen’sDiamondJubileecelebrations
marked 60 years of the Queen’sreign, during aspecial weekend earlier this month, and many localpeople joined in with their very own spectacular street parties. As people headed to the capital to see
thousandsofboats take part in one of the largest flotillasever seen on the River Thames, Havering also did its bit to mark the occasion with the help of Romfest and aGolden Highway carnival procession. As the only otherBritish monarch to
celebrateaDiamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897 it was definitely aonce in a lifetime event. Anotherevent that will not be held again
anytimesoon will be London Olympics. We arejust weeks away from the games and excitement is rapidly building as we awaitto see 15,000 athletes from 200 countriestake part in 26 sportsfor the biggest the trophy of them all –anOlympic gold medal. Amassive 20,000 members of the media
will head to London and its surrounding areas, to capturethe events on film and camera, alongwith hundreds of thousands of visitors and spectators. It has been aremarkable year of celebra-
tions so far and letshope thereare plenty moretocome as we get behind Team GB when they take part in the Olympic Games from July 27 and the Paralympic Games from August 29.
