Sub-bantams perform well for Gold Rush

by Casey Pritchard assistant sports editor The Arizona Gold Rush track and field club team took 14 athletes to the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 26-July 1, and brought home 11 medals. The event, which was held at Maverick Stadium at the University of Texas at Arlington, awards medals to the top-eight finishers in each event. Arizona Gold Rush had two athletes collect three medals each, one got two and three others took home one. “My sub-bantams [ages 8 and under], I’m really excited about,” coach Eureka Hall said. “I only had three and they got seven of the medals.” Amara Hawkins-Quinones and Joy Moore each collected three, while Jordan Grant had the other. Eddy Yescas was the big story though, as he won the midget boys (11-12) 800-meter race, finishing in 2 minutes, 15.42 seconds. “Eddy ran a smart race,” Hall said.

TRACK

“He’s a hard worker, very dedicated kid. Just strategy, he didn’t try to take over the whole race. He was in third, fourth place the first lap. The last lap he came from out of third, fourth place, got behind this kid, got to the 250 mark and just started sprinting all the way in.” It was a vindicating race for Yescas, who had been ranked No. 1 in the nation for that race in his age group, only to fall

to fifth by the time the event occurred. He showed where he truly belongs though. “He just ran a smart race, you couldn’t ask for better,” Hall reiterated. “It was a little windy, he kind of drafted behind kids, played it smart, didn’t overdue it. He just ran a good race. He balanced each lap.” Yescas also competed in the 1,500 race, finishing third in 4:52.7. He led for the first few laps by 50 meters, but couldn’t hold on, Hall said. “Two kids just came out of nowhere and beat him at the end,” she said. “He was exhausted at the end trying to keep his pace.” Of the sub-bantams, Hawkins-Quinones had the best overall performance, taking second in the 800, fourth in the 400 and seventh in the 200. Her time in the 800 race was a 2:56.83. She was originally going to run the 100 instead of the 800 at nationals. “We put her in the state meet in the 800 just to see what her time would be like, and she ended up running a 2:59, which not even my high school girls can do,” Hall said. “She’s basically right there with them and she’s 9 years old. So we decided to take her out of her 100 meters and put her in the 800 because she qualified for both of them.”

“As a coach I was really pleased with them because you know physically they’re ready, but men- tally it’s a challenge in part because you don’t know what they’re going to do when they step on the track.”

Arizona Gold Rush coach — Eureka Hall

The unfortunate thing about that switch is it might have cost her the title in the 800. Her seeded time was not listed on the heat sheets because of the late change, so she had to compete in the slower heat and basically ran in front by herself, Hall said. She was the runner-up by less than a second. “When I

her she would have beat her.” Hawkins-Quinones’ time in the 400 was a 1:16.20, and she finished the 200 in 33.32. Joy Moore also earned a second-place

called national headquarters to switch her event they forgot to put in her seeded time,” Hall said. “If she would have had that girl [the winner] pushing

finish, doing so in the 200 at 31.37 seconds. “Her and this little girl [Azjah Reeves] were neck and neck,” Hall said. “Joy went in with the fastest time after prelims, but the other girl, she just ran a good curve. She got out good, Joy was on her, trying to get her, she was right there.” Moore’s time improved from the prelims to the finals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Reeves. Moore was seventh and eighth in the 400 and 100, respectively. Her times in those races were 1:21.17 and 15.86.

fifth in the long jump. His distance was 3.41 meters. “As a coach I was really pleased with them because you know physically they’re ready, but mentally it’s a challenge in part because you don’t know what they’re going to do when they step on the track,” Hall said. “You know what they’re capable of doing, but I was just blown, especially with my sub- bantam group that took third overall in team scoring, and there was only three of them.”

Other medalists

Yescas, Scieneaux Jarmon was eighth in the youth boys (13-14) high jump at 1.55 meters, and Julia Yescas was seventh in the youth girls 800. Her time was 2:29.02. “Our kids were prepared, they came in and competed,” Hall said. “The climate was perfect, it was hot, a little humid, but our kids were able to perform in the weather. They were a little nervous because competing against kids on the national level is different than competing against kids in the state of Arizona week after week. But I think they were mentally prepared for the competition, some had already competed at nationals. They had to step it up.” Eddy Yescas wound up being the first athlete on Hall’s club track team to win a national title. “I was really proud of Eddy, he really stepped it up this year,” Hall said. “He trained really hard. When you work hard, eventually it pays off. Now he can say I’m No. 1 in the nation.”

In addition to the sub-bantam group and Grant, the third sub-bantam, finished
