Jitterbugging the night away

Check out GMB’s Janet Stevens (pictured above, with basket), showing off some classic glamour. Janet, who works at the GMB of ice in York, teamed up with friends to hold a 1940s-themed dance to raise money for an

Alzheimer’s charity. The dance took place at Melodie Park in York on 11 February 2012. It was supported by GMB York General branch and raised a total of £2,300. Well done to all concerned.

Health champion Ron highlights meningitis concerns

Ron Grahame, who was a GMB branch secretary and shop steward for many years, is helping the citizens of Leeds to understand and recognise both the symptoms and eff ects of meningitis. Ron said: “This is potentially a killer disease; every year 2,500 people die of meningitis and many of those contracting it suff er amputations.Encouraging awareness is one way of helping to save lives. GMB career mentor

Desiree Risebury, a GMB organiser based at Wakefield, was invited to speak to a group of students at Shef ield Hallam University about the world of work. Desiree was one of a number of speakers who addressed first, second and third year politics students studying at the university.

The purpose was to share

information and inspire students about the career options open to them and share personal career stories. Desiree enjoyed the experience so much that she has agreed to become a career mentor at the university.

The classic symptoms include headache, stiff neck and a dislike of bright lights. Other symptoms can include aching limbs, cold hands and feet, a rash which starts like pin pricks and develops into purple bruises, so don’t delay in getting professional advice.”

Team GMB on the run

On 8 July, a team of 13 GMB members ran the Jane Tomlinson 10K in Leeds to raise money for cancer charities. Congratulations to everyone who took part.
