Free legal advice* is all part of being a GMB member. GMB solicitors, Thompsons, have secured compensation for a number of Yorkshire & North Derbyshire retired members suff ering with asbestos-related diseases. Here are just two of those cases…

Name: Peter Sanderson

Name: Vincent Corcoran

Town: Doncaster

Vincent started work in the 1940s as an apprentice

boiler maker with British Rail at the Doncaster Railworks. During his work he was exposed to large quantities of asbestos dust and fibres. The boilers and fire boxes that Vincent

had to repair were covered in blue asbestos lagging. Labourers would pull the lagging off and the air would fill with dust and settle on clothing and surfaces. Vincent was recently diagnosed with

asbestosis. He suff ers shortness of breath and can no longer enjoy his favourite social activity of crown green bowling in the way that he did.

Town: York

Peter developed the asbestos cancer

mesothelioma after being exposed to the lethal dust while working as an electrician for British Rail from the 1960s right up until the 1990s. He spent time working in the coach building shop, where drilling would disturb the asbestos insulation in the panelling. The electricians would work among the

dust and bits of asbestos insulation lying on the floor. They were not provided with breathing equipment to protect them from inhalation or told about the dangers of asbestos exposure. GMBs solicitors, Thompsons, fought his claim for compensation, resulting in him receiving substantial damages just seven months after it was submitted.
