GMB report finds evidence of illegal blacklisting by Carillion across the UK

lacklisting is illegal, yet GMB has discovered evidence of 224 people being blacklisted by construction firm Carillion. There can be little more despicable than preventing someone from finding work, but this is exactly what Carillion has done. The evidence of blacklisting came to light after names were released as part of an

In another recent Carillion blacklisting case, an ex-Carillion HR manager, Mr Wainright, said in his witness statement, “In my opinion a blacklist is a list of people... that a company or group of companies would not employ for reasons that they cannot legally or lawfully

rooted in Carillion and other companies gives a glimpse into how employers like Carillion have illegally used their power and money to blacklist citizens and to deny them their rights to employment. The publication of the report coincided with a visit to GMB Congress in Brighton by 150 GMB members employed by Carillion on the PFI contract at Great Western Hospital in Swindon. They have had 20 days of strike action over the bullying, harassment and Carillion’s failure to deal with a cover-up, bribery and corruption by its managers (see page 12). In a three-month period it is estimated that Carillion checked 2,776 construction workers’ names, while it is estimated to have checked a whopping 14,724 names between October 1999 and April 2004. In the judgment of the Employment Tribunal in London in March, the judge said of the worker’s blacklisting by Carillion: “It seems to us that he has suff ered a genuine injustice and we greatly regret that the law provides him with no remedy.”
