hile many are still reeling from the ongoing economic recession (Will it ever end? Will we ever stop


complaining about it?), there is some light at the end of that proverbial tunnel which is offering hope to many. The problems experienced in Greece,


Spain, Italy, Portugal and other countries; the downgrading of national and bank credit and ongoing company mergers and/or closures are all bad omens. The recession of 2007/8 has lasted a long, long time and it has been trying times for many of us – in this industry and others. So, do we accept it or fight back? Taking the positive outlook are the


Germans. Not just Angela Merkel and her fellow politicians but people in the baking industry. A recent Press event to promote iba – arguably the biggest event on the international baking calendar – was brimful of confidence and optimism from German Bakery Trade Federation president Peter

event – just prior to the massively popular Oktoberfest but the size of this year’s iba is enough o extend the ‘fest fever’ say the organisers. There will be 12 exhibition halls, around


1,200 exhibitors from around the world and in excess of 80,000 trade visitors (many of them international, too) are expected to be in attendance over the fair’s six days, wandering an exhibition area in excess of almost 100 football pitches! This confidence is encouraging and all


indications are that iba will be one of the best yet. Interesting how, as the old pop song goes, even the bad times are good and forward thinkers are turning adversity into opportunity.
