selling $500 amps. Not everybody has that kind of cash when they’re walking around, so that’s why we use Square now.” It has proven so successful that Hunter is now using Square in the store as well

to move along transactions more efficiently. The store has a Droid phone, which is now used to process orders as well. “We swipe the credit cards right on this phone instead of having to deal with walking over and getting behind the register. Then we can send the customer an e-mail receipt,” he said. King Pin also makes use of the Metra app for its vehicle fit guide. “Having this app

on my phone lets me know of kit and speaker sizes,” Hunter said, adding that he also uses the Scosche app. “It’s the only app that I have paid for, but it has the vehicle wiring schematics. If I am with a customer, I don’t have to step away. I don’t have to go to the counter or go look at the computer to find out that information.” John Schumacher, manager of Grand Audio Upholstery & Sound, also found that apps are the future, especially when they can be used as an on-the-go sales tool. “We haven’t really tapped into it this as much as we could have, but I know we need to do it now,” Schumacher said. “And we totally agree with it. That is where we are going.” He noted that he also has used the Scosche app, which is convenient to have on

one’s smartphone. “For instance, if I am at the grocery store wearing a company shirt, I might get asked by someone if I can install a car radio. If I have my phone with me, I can check that information with an app right then. “You’re not just running your business out of your store these days anymore. Now you’re able to do it on the go.”

REALIZING THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS At Yukon, Okla.–based Auto FX, owner Billy Wulffenstein said the priority of late has just been focusing on taking care of the customers, but the retailer acknowledges that he has seen the future and knows all about apps. “We use the Metra app on our smartphones,” he said. “We also use an iPad to show product that we have in the store instead of walking around to show 52 differ- ent items. We realize that customers have these smartphones and they want to use them in their daily lives along with the apps. So we need to do the same — step up and have these things, too.” ■
