Oliver Sidwell, 27 Co-Founder of RMP Enterprise www.ratemyplacement.co.uk @ratemyplacement

1. Give us an elevator pitch for your company RMP Enterprise specialises in undergraduate recruitment and engaging with career conscious first and second year students looking for placements and internships. Our portfolio of products spans online, offline and on-campus platforms ensuring we are the market leading company for all stakeholders - students, universities and employers - in undergraduate placements and internships.

2. When were you hit by the entrepreneurial bug? Myself and 2 colleagues undertook placements and internships during the 2005-2006 academic year at Loughborough University. Off the back of our experiences, we felt it was more luck than judgement that we found a decent placement and identified an information gap in the market to help educate and inform students of the opportunities available, and showcase the employers that offered these opportunities. We then started building a community of users and clients, learning what worked and what didn’t until we were able to refine how the undergraduate market should look.

3. What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Maintaining consistent growth whilst managing a growing team of 18 is an ongoing challenge and a less obvious achievement we’re most proud of. More tangibly, finishing 56th in the UK Startups 100 most innovative, inspiring and ground-breaking new companies in 2010 alongside the likes of Wonga.com and Reggae Reggae Sauce was a wonderful achievement. And winning £50,000 in the Barclays ‘Take One Small Step’ Competition 2011 was great!

Francine Bennett, 31 Founder of Mastodon C. www.mastodonc.com @mastodonc

1. Give us a 30 second pitch on your business. Mastodon C is a green cloud computing company which manages companies’ cloud big data processing in a way that’s cheaper, greener, and more flexible than signing up directly with a single provider. Cloud computing has a huge carbon footprint: our mission is to massively reduce that.

2. How did you set up the company? We went to a green hackathon for fun and built a prototype green cloud computing ratings product which won the first prize. When we looked at the numbers in depth, we realised that this product could have an enormous impact on computing’s carbon footprint, and that we needed to build it as a real company.

3. What has been your biggest achievement so far? We’re a 1 month old company, so our biggest achievement so far has been taking the leap from very successful professional careers to running a clean-tech startup! We think there are much greater achievements to come.

4. What’s the next step for Mastodon C? We want to be controlling so much computing demand from our customers, that cloud providers will be compelled by market forces to start providing better and greener resources to our users.
