their customers so they wanted to provide something of real value that saves them time and helps patients understand – it’s was a win win.”
Was Kim considering placing MediKidz on a digital format? Utilising the web seemed paramount as this is where children tend to flock for entertainment. “Social media has become a huge component of building the brand and we have begun a blog where children can discuss how their illness has affected them with other patients and know that they are not alone.” Did Kim have a social media strategy for the future? “Absolutely. will still be providing explanations through the comics but I intend to look at iphone applications and online games on topics such as ‘how your medicine works.’”
Lastly, I ask Kim if she had faced any particular setbacks throughout her entrepreneurial journey and if there were lessons learnt. “One day I looked at my business partner Kate Hersov and we both knew we were running out of money but we just didn’t give up. Entrepreneurs are insane – ordinary people say ‘Stop! Don’t do it!’ But you just have to have belief in what you’re doing.
“It’s also very important to get the right people on board and I can admit that I made mistakes with that at the start. Now I take the time to meet every employee and have learnt from it.”
As the interview came to a close, I ask Kim if she had been inspired along the way to keep striving to make MediKidz the success it is today and if she could pass on a few words of encouragement to fellow entrepreneurs. ‘’I read a book called ‘Good To Great’ by Jim Collins about the difference between a good company and a great company, with analysis on particular companies over one year. A case study that stuck with me was conducted 10 and 15 yrs later after the initial experiment, showing the difference between Coca Cola and another drinks company that started at the same time. One of the primary lessons that book teaches is getting the right people – even more so than forging the actual idea. That has always stuck with me.”
