Those super slim girls you will see leaping about on the mat waving coloured ribbons did not get there by gorging on biscuits and eating food straight from the fridge without cutlery!! Eating certain foods can be good for your vitality and health by targeting the needs of various organs and areas of concern. It is your choice whether or not you go organic, either way it is worth including some of these ‘super foods’ in your daily diet. Brussels sprouts and cabbage can improve the function of our liver and protect us from cancers. Garlic can help prevent heart disease and cancers. Fish is rich in protein and the vitamins and minerals that can aid brain function. Especially oily fish as we keep being told! Avocado is rich in potassium, vitamin E, folic acid amongst other elements that can result in better skin, hair and nails. Extra virgin olive oil is good for the heart. Tomatoes are high in lutein and Lycopene to protect the eyes from macular degeneration. All of these foods are easily obtainable and easy to fit into your regular meal plans, especially over the coming summer months.

We all have to eat so we may as well eat foods that are helping rather than harming.

Foods that are known for their bad reputation include, white sugar and white flour. Commonly found in cakes, bread, biscuits, pastry and chocolate treats. Artificial colours, sweeteners and preservatives need no explanation, just avoid whenever you can. Processed, smoked or coloured meats, fish and cheeses are best kept to a minimum.

Refined wheat and other sugar loaded cereals with kooky rabbits, bears or smiling leprechauns on the side of the brightly coloured packets are not jolly or fun, quite the opposite actually. You could make a few small dietary and exercise changes over the coming weeks – move about a bit more and eat a bit less - so you don’t feel quite so lumpen and leaden when those eager athletes from all over the world leap onto our screens brimming with vitality, smiling broadly and living their dreams. Their dedication is inspiring. Indeed all the athletes and sportsmen and women who will march across our screens come July are symbols of what you can do if you put your mind to it. Happy Trails Readers, Happy Trails.
