In the garden July checklist
Mow lawn regularly, setting blades high in hot weather.
Water plants only in drought – and give them a drenching, not a sprinkle.
Mulch ground after rain to keep water in and weeds out.
Keep weeds under control.
Deadhead roses and border flowers regularly to encourage more blooms to grow.
Cut back lavender plants to help them keep their shape.
New growth needs to be tied in to keep flowers looking their best.
Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society
To complete our programme for this session the Society visited Gardening Scotland in Edinburgh. We now look forward to the Annual Flower Show on Saturday 25th August to be held in the British Legion Hall Bridge of Weir. Hopefully the next few weeks will bring sunshine and just a few showers to help the gardeners present a good display. There are classes within the show syllabus for everyone from the more experienced to the absolute novice as well as many opportunities for children of all ages to showcase their talents. Tea, coffee and home baking will be on offer followed by the presentation of prizes and auction of flowers and produce. There will be a small plant sale outside the Hall on the day, any donations of plants would be gratefully received. Please contact the Show Secretary Beth Hepburn on 01505 612898 for a syllabus or further information.
In dry weather, water containers in the evening so they can absorb the moisture overnight.
Stand houseplants outdoors in gentle summer rain to clean them.
Cottage garden annuals – Grow familiar favourites, mixing them in the border: common marigolds and cornflowers look lovely together, for instance:- Pot marigold, The cornflower ‘Black Ball’, Cosmos bipinnatus ‘sea shells’ has fluted petals, each rolled round a tube, like a sea shell. The petals splay out from a button like centre. It has ferny foliage and is excellent in borders and useful for cutting. It looks good with Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Purity’.
