Local sailors Ian McLauglan and Lewis Marr

Home and away victories for Local Sailors Iain McLaughlan and Lewis Marr.

The sun shone – a sweltering 25c, the wind blew and the weekend of the 26/27th May at Largs Sailing Club became the best weekend of sailing so far this season but it was also very challenging for the young sailors from all over Scotland. From areas of calm to a constant 33 knots of breeze, Saturday produced some exhilarating sailing; some mixed results and by the end of 3 races lots of completely exhausted young sailors at the Scottish Youth Series event.

The Duncan Trophy is awarded by Renfrewshire Golf Union to the County Youth Match Play Champion. It is contested by the leading sixteen youths from the Stroke Play Championship (the Menzies Trophy).

Renfrew Golf Club provide the venue for all the rounds and the four who fought their way to the semi fi nals were Gavin Stirling (Caldwell) who had disposed of the leading qualifi er, Whinhill’s Jamie Alexander, in the previous round, Alex Ferguson (Paisley), Craig Pirie (Renfrew) and Stewart Watt (Old Course Ranfurly) who had beaten last year’s champion, Anton O’Donnell (Whinhill)

The semi-fi nals turned out to be one-sided affairs. Last year’s runner up, Alex Ferguson cruised to a 4 and 3 victory over Gavin Stirling and Stewart Watt produced a birdie barrage to take care of a spirited challenge from Craig Pirie winning 5and 4 despite Craig’s home advantage. He scored well but could not cope with the powerful and accurate ball-striking of Watt.

Sunshine again greeted the sailors on Sunday morning, however the wind was again variable with both an Easterly and a North Westerly breeze battling for supremacy. After a long wait the North West breeze grew enough to allow the racing to commence and another 2 races were raced in light winds and glorious sunshine.

In the fi nal, the competitors had to deal with persistent rain but, despite this, Stewart played some great golf and was four up at the turn. Alex matched him on the back nine but he had left himself too much to do and eventually had to settle for his third runner up spot with the new champion winning 5 and 4 after a very impressive display of golf.
