We have had an exceptionally busy end of term. Our trip to Edinburgh Zoo to see the Giant pandas was a massive success with much fun had by all.
Duchal Nursery School The sun
shone for us on sports day and the children to
seemed thoroughly
enjoy taking part in all of the events. The children had a fantastic time at the Vines’ Railway in
St Fillan’s Primary School Quarriers’
Village, getting to ride on their miniature steam train. Many thanks to Chris and Katrina Vine for their hospitality and for providing each of the children with a copy of Chris’s book.
We celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by having our very own garden party. The children wore party clothes and crowns and dined on a great feast!
It was a pleasure to have Rebecca Stenhouse at Duchal recently. As part of
her academic studies, Rebecca spoke to the children individually rating their attitude, empathy, knowledge
and ability to read the behaviour of cats, dogs and rabbits. It is hoped the children learned new knowledge, for example, what to do if a dog makes them feel scared.
Our annual BBQ was once again well attended and provided a perfect opportunity for our new parents to get to know each other, the teachers and current parents. Many thanks, once again, to the Vines for their hospitality. The children put on an end of term concert with lots of singing, dancing and dressing up. Everyone had great fun, although it was an emotional end for those leaving Duchal for ‘Big school’ in August.
Preparations for our 2012/13 session are well underway. We had an open morning during which the children entering Duchal in August had the opportunity to meet the teachers and sample the great fun had by all those that attend Duchal.
The AGM will be held on Monday 20th Aug from 8pm at the New Community Centre, Kilmacolm.
Our new P1 pupils have visited the school twice and have worked with their new teacher and “big buddies”. Our current P1 pupils have been working on their Olympics topic. P2/3 fi nished off the school year with their Pirates topic and even had a pirate ship in their classroom. P3 pupils made a “Scottish” version of the Olympic torch and posted this off to our link school in Wales. Our Welsh friends are sending us their own version of the Olympic torch and similar writing which will travel to us from their school in Wales. One hundred pupils and staff travelled to Lochwinnoch to cheer on the Olympic torch as it travelled through Scotland. John Meehan and Millie Rayner from P6 sadly couldn’t go to Lochwinnoch as they had been shortlisted for their recent entries into a national writing competition. To their delight John took fi rst place and Millie took third place. Staff, pupils and parents were extremely proud of them as over 35,000 primary pupils from around Scotland entered the competition. As a fi nal surprise for the pupils attending the writing awards ceremony, the Olympic torch also visited Hampden Park and both John and Millie got a chance to hold the torch, so they didn’t miss out after all! After days of rain, we were pleased to see blue skies above on our annual school sports day. Queen Margaret house came out at this year’s champions so the House Cup is adorned with yellow ribbons for the coming year. Congratulations QM!
P7 enjoyed their residential trip to Lockerbie Manor. As we
go to press P7 are currently concluding rehearsals for their end of year show which we are all looking forward to. They have been a fabulous class to have in the school and we wish them well as they head off their separate ways to their 5 respective secondary schools. Finally we welcome back Mrs Kaney and Mrs Mackay from maternity leave. Our thanks and best wishes go to Mrs Thomson and Mr Keenan who covered for them in their absence.
Rivendale Nursery
Rivendale Nursery joined in with Olympic Torch celebrations by hosting their own torch relay along with other Collin Care nurseries. Children enjoyed using a variety of public transport to collect and pass on the torch with it starting in Wishaw and ending in Saltcoats.
The torch started off on Monday 4th June at the 2 nurseries in Wishaw (Cabbage Patch and Kiddieshack).
From there it was passed on to Mayfi eld Nursery in Govanhill, Cardonald Private Nursery and then on to us at Rivendale then Treetops Too in Saltcoats. Our children welcomed the torch with union jack fl ags and cheers. Many parents of the nursery helped to take part in this event travelling on and off trains and buses.
The children have been learning about the forth coming Olympic Games through play. They have set up their own gym/ healthy café in the room and learned about different countries taking part in the games. We also took the opportunity to visit the real torch
in Kilmacolm. 42 JULY 2012 | your LOCAL news every month - in print and online |
