Adopt-A-Monument
Preservation of Kilallan Kirk and Graveyard – Our Living Ruin
Traditionally there has been one service a year at the old Kirk, in the open air, bringing the Kirk to life, and that time is nigh!
At 6.45pm on 1st July this year’s service will take place, held by the Reverend Donald Campbell. Take this opportunity to visit Kilallan Kirk, and experience both the different location for a service, and the ancient monument. If underfoot conditions are too wet, the service will be held at Houston & Kilellan Parish Church.
You may be inspired to join those who showed interest in becoming heritage heroes, at the Houston show, where many discovered more about our living ruin. Thanks to all those who spoke to us, who fi lled in the questionnaire to help shape the project, and especially those who put their names down as potential volunteers. Your varied skills will be utilised if the project moves forward.
Similarly, there is interest from sectors of the community in participating in the project. One such is the local schools showing a willingness to get active in it, as part of their curriculum. There are also thoughts of having a Young Archaeologists Club, outwith school hours, to expand young people’s knowledge of their local heritage, and heritage in general. This would all be good for the future generations, as custodians of the projected works.
Currently, in excess of £100,000 has been raised towards the £200,000 needed to preserve the kirk, and hopefully the rest will be committed by the end of August.
