Kilmacolm Camera Club

Last month, a good representation of Club members took an evening trip to Luss, for some Loch Lomond photo opportunities. And we had it all. Attractively coloured skies; smooth, glassy refl ections on the water; chocolate-box views of boats on the Loch – in short, a perfect evening out…except for one or two million minor drawbacks, namely MIDGES! It takes a certain degree of photographic singlemindedness and dedication to hold the camera steady when a phalanx of the wee critters is intent on breaching one’s inner ear!

Nevertheless, such was the determination of Club members that we actually succeeded in bringing back a good selection of images. It was another good evening for sharing some practical photo tips, and I certainly learned a few (memo to self – next time, bring a tube of Skin So Soft, a bucket of Jungle Formula and a fl ame-thrower). Luss really did offer some great photo opportunities, though, and the standard of our pictures really did come up to scratch (as did our members - frequently!).

Remaining summer time destinations include Greenock (10th July), Close-up Photography (14th August – location to be decided) and Glasgow (Kingston Bridge and Water Towers – 11th September).

Please come along to any of these venues (leaving at 7pm from the Cross). We’re pretty friendly. We don’t bite (which is more than I can say for the little so-and-so-s which fl ew out of my camera when I changed lenses 24 hours later!). The Olympic Flame passed through Kilmacolm and on the stage in the new piazza, I had the great honour of being joined by 1948 Olympian Hamish Hardie from Kilmacolm and fi ve times Para Olympian swimmer Kenny Cairns from Port Glasgow. The whole event was a resounding success with a police estimate of 3,200 people attending. The village was busy and credit must go to the shops who were so colourfully decorated.

The visit of the Earl of Wessex to The Cargill Centre was an opportunity for him to meet user groups and families of the directors. HRH also had the opportunity to meet pupils from Kilmacolm Primary and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme pupils from St Columba. The current Board has been in situ since 2007 under the chairmanship of Helen Calvert with the support of Colin Christy, Colin McGinn, George Stoddart, Paul Martin, Fiona Scott and Charlotte Doak. Councillor McCabe and myself are ex-offi cio members of the board expressly charged with ensuring Inverclyde Council’s contribution to match the generous one from The WA Cargil Fund.

The Centre is exceeding expectations and Inverclyde Leisure staff have brought their professionalism to the running of what is a signifi cant addition to the village.

The high spot of the Jubilee Celebrations in the village was the fete at the Old Kirk Manse hosted by the Rev Peter McEnhill. The event was very well attended and there was plenty to do for young and old. A big thanks to all who organised the day. We seemed to have acquired the biggest BBQ in the land, and Ralph Leishman and Billy McAuslan the honorary chefs put in some shift cooking.

I attended the Jubilee Tea Dance organised by KCC in The Cargill Centre. Again well attended with hats to compliment the occasion. Great value for a pound.

I attended The Tall Ships Tales at Greenock Town Hall with a major contribution from all of P5 at KPS, a wonderful presentation of ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ at Port Glasgow High School and the Silver Tablet Concert at St Columba.

The dramatic society presentation of “A Rise in The Market” was very enjoyable and really slick particularly the entrance and exit of the artiste with the foam, which I missed.

The planning application by St Columba School for an extension will not go to the August Planning Board due to the number of representations both against and in favour, which currently number 1450 in total.

My July surgery is the 17th July 10-11am in The Cargill Centre.
