Kilmacolm Welder thanked for his contribution in RICS Conservation Winner 2012

Saint Andrew’s Cathedral has been announced as the winner of the Building Conservation category of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Scotland Awards 2012. The project combined restoration work with new artistic commissions.

Although the Cathedral reopened last year, one of the outstanding features only materialized earlier this year.

Kilmacolm and

Quarriers Village communities are most welcome to attend Kilmacolm Community Council meetings, held on the last Tuesday of the month except for July and December.

June was a very busy month. Following the council elections in May councillors, new and those re-elected, underwent a series of training sessions across a range of issues, and we also had our usual cycle of council and community meetings. There was also the Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Torch passing through Inverclyde as it made its way up and down the length of Scotland and the UK.

One of the highlights for me during the Jubilee Celebrations was watching the concert that took place outside Buckingham Palace. It was great seeing such an array of stars entertaining us on the night. Locally I was glad to see that Kilmacolm Community Council (KCC) held a Jubilee Tea Dance in the Community Centre. At the April community council meeting I had suggested to the committee that they may want to ask the voluntary organisation Your Voice to give assistance as they have been running tea dances in Port Glasgow and Greenock town halls for our senior citizens for some years. I was glad to see Your Voice helping out and indeed I believe that the tea dance was so successful that others are planned in Kilmacolm for the future, the next one being on Thursday 2nd August.

On the 8th June we had the Olympic Torch coming to the district, going through Kilmacolm and upper Port Glasgow. It is a day that will be long remembered by many of us. There was a real sense of history in the making as the Olympic Torch procession made its way down Kilmacolm Road. In Port Glasgow we were also fortunate to be entertained by several very fi ne singers on the day.

In June, as in most years about this time, I was invited to several shows. Unfortunately, there were one or two I was unable to attend, but one I was able to attend was the “Tall Ships Tales” that was written by Alan Beck and performed over three days in Greenock town hall. The show involved children from schools around Inverclyde and was enjoyed by all those who attended. Productions like these again displays the abundance of local talent we have here in Inverclyde.

During the council elections a number of parents who’s children attend Kilmacolm Primary School had approached myself and other councillors about trying to get a new playing pitch to replace the old red blaes one. The parents would like to see a new 3G pitch like the many new ones we are seeing being built around Inverclyde. I agree with the parents that a new all weather pitch should be built at the school and I have contacted education offi cials about this.

As Kilmacolm residents will know St Columba’s School is planning to apply to extend the school. I was at the May Kilmacolm Community Council meeting where over a hundred members of the public attended to hear discussions about the planning application. I believe the school’s application may be heard by the council’s Planning Board in August or September. Over the past few weeks I have been emailed, written to and called by many residents about St Columba’s application. Although, I do not sit on the Planning Board myself, I have told anyone contacting me that it would be inappropriate for me to comment on this in advance of it going before the Board.

Finally, I hope everyone has a good break over the summer. I am not holding any surgeries in July. My next two surgeries will be in August. Anyone wanting to contact me call my council offi ce on 01475 712727, mobile 07747 765 839 or email jim.macleod@inverclyde.gov.uk
