kilmacolm & quarriers Kilmacolm Old Kirk Jubilee Fete
Saturday 2nd June was the day when many of Kilmacolm’s villagers visited the Church Manse Gardens for a day of fun and bargain hunting around the various stalls.
The Fete was offi cially opened by councillor David Wilson, the Depute Provost of Inverclyde Council, who got every one off to a good start, and spent much of his day meeting the people and exploring the various activities which catered for all ages. Considering the recent erratic weather patterns we were fortunate to get it dry and for a short time the sun actually shone.
Thanks to the efforts of all those who took part in organising and running the Fete and the many people from the Village who came along on the day a grand total of £2,505 was raised. This sum together with money raised from previous church activities will go towards the building of a new school classroom and toilet facilities in Gweru, Zimbabwe where Kilmacolm Old Kirk is twinned with St Peter’s Church in Gweru.

Food Waste Collections Rolled Out Across Inverclyde
Around 32,000 households across Inverclyde will soon be able to discard their food waste in a more environmentally friendly way, as Inverclyde Council re-launches its food waste collection service this month, supported by funding from Zero Waste Scotland.
The permanent roll out of the food waste service follows a pilot scheme with 5000 households in 2008, which proved extremely successful, with an average of 1.55 kilograms per household of food waste being collected each week during the trial. Residents will receive a food waste caddy, bin and a supply of compostable sacks, together with information on the new weekly collection service, which will start in July.
With food waste making up around a third of the average household residual waste - most of which ends up on landfi ll sites, the Council’s local waste team will be hosting information sessions over the coming weeks to tell residents more about the benefi ts of using the service.
The collection has been implemented as part of the requirement placed on local authorities to collect food waste from domestic properties by 1st January 2013 under The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012.
Commenting on the new collection service, Environment & Regeneration Convener Councillor Michael McCormick said: “The food waste collection was hugely popular when it was fi rst launched four years ago and I am delighted that thanks to support from Zero Waste Scotland, the collection will now be rolled out across the area.”
Iain Gulland, Director at Zero Waste Scotland added: “Scottish householders dispose of over half a million tonnes of food and drinks waste each year. When sent to landfi ll, food waste decomposes, releasing greenhouse gases which are harmful to the environment. However, when recycled the same waste can be transformed into a valuable resource, producing green energy and a nutrient-rich fertiliser. Householders can also save money by taking action to reduce the amount they throw away in the fi rst place, through our Love Food Hate Waste initiative.”
For details of the dates and locations of the information sessions, call the Recycling Helpline on 01475 715901 or visit the Planning and Environment section of the Inverclyde Council website at:
