Bishopton Christian Aid Group would like to thank all those who donated plants, baking, Fairtrade tea, coffee & sugar, and raffl e prizes for the Christian Aid Plant Sale and Coffee Morning which was held on 12th May, at the start of Christian Aid Week. We were also delighted that Margaret Harcus, a local artist, sold paintings at the event and donated the proceeds to Christian Aid.
Bishopton was awarded Fairtrade status 5 years ago this month, so Celia Mackie, Chair of the local Fairtrade Group cut a specially baked Fairtrade Anniversary Cake. Celia thanked villagers who have helped spread the message regarding Fairtrade and those who have bought Fairtrade goods.
We would like to thank all those who supported and attended the event which raised a creditable £713.
Bishopton’s Brilliant Gala Day & Gala Week
On Saturday, 16th June 2012, hundreds of people braved the showers and descended upon the Renfrewshire village of Bishopton, to attend the 40th anniversary gala day. It was well attended, despite being a bit windswept and damp at times.
In addition to the gala day, known locally as ‘Bishopton Day’, Bishopton Week Group coordinated and organised a range of events throughout the week to suit all age groups within the community. These
included a 40th anniversary Dinner Dance, a magic show, a treasure hunt, a fun run and a family fun night. Each of the events attracted numerous participants contributing to a very successful gala week.
The children’s treasure hunt was won by Avril Sinclair, Isla Campbell and Morven Sinclair. The runners-up were Connor Wilson and Ewan Gunn.
Almost 300 people took part in the village fun-run, organised by Bishopton Youth Club. Local businessman, David Woodrow supported the event to marshal the runners. Bishopton Princess Sara Uslu started the fun run of 2 laps around Bishopton. Also joining the fun-run was Olympic Torch Bearer Colin McGregor, carrying the Olympic Torch.

They received their prizes on ‘Bishopton Day’ from Mary Sutherland of Bishopton Youth Club.

The crowd enjoyed a variety of entertainment, including pipe band music, performances from Firey Eric, skirmishes by the Glasgow Vikings; children’s rugby display, live music by Kilbarchan Pipe Band and bands from Erskine Music Media Studio, singing by Per4mance Stage School, professional wrestling, a demonstration from Peter Bowsher, champion chainsaw wood carver, a climbing wall and lots more.
The gala started with a procession of fl oats through the village, on the theme of The Olympics and was lead by Kilbarchan Pipe Band. Bishopton Princess Sara Uslu (age 11) was driven in a luxury motorcar and was supported by her attendants Rebecca Fitzsimmons (age 10), Heather Esplin (age 9) and Mya Figagol (age 8). Former Bishopton Princesses accompanied the parade in an open- top bus.

The total from the door-to-door collections for Christian Aid Week at £3,865, was approximately £200 more than last year - a terrifi c result in the current economic climate and demonstration of our village’s willingness to dig deep to help others. An additional £340 will also come to Christian Aid from the taxman thanks to those contributors who completed the relevant Gift Aid forms.
Special thanks to the band of 60 collectors who braved the rain during Christian Aid Week. The Bishopton Christian Aid Committee would also like to thank all those who have contributed time and money to help those in need in the developing world.
