Paisley 850 Pilgrimage to Whithorn Paisley Abbey is 850 years old! Fotheringay: Charter dated 1163.
‘Know all present and all to come, that I, Walter son of Alan ... to the honour of God and by the power of His grace, will establish a certain house of devotion on my lands of Paisley according to the Order of the monks of Cluny, with the common consent and assent of the Prior and Convent of Wenlock’
The monastery was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, St Milburga (the Anglo Saxon saint of Wenlock Priory), St James of Compostella (the patron saint of the Stewarts) and St Mirin (an Irish monk who
brought Christianity to this part of Scotland) It soon became a centre of pilgrimage.
As part of the year long celebrations starting on St Mirin’s Day 15th September 2012 and finishing on 15th September 2013, a Pilgrimage has been organised from Paisley to Whithorn, the cradle of Christianity in Scotland. We are hoping that people will take up the challenge by walking in the footsteps of thousands over the centuries including James 4th and Robert the Bruce. You could raise money for charity and find out something new about yourself.
The walk, a distance of some 115 miles, has been broken down into manageable sections occurring on monthly Saturdays beginning on Saturday 25th August 2012.
For our first walk we will meet at the Barochan Cross within Paisley Abbey at 9.30am. We will then walk to Paisley Canal Street, where, with the kind permission of Active Renfrewshire, we will join their annual 10 mile walk from Paisley to Lochwinnoch. The walk, which forms the first leg of the Pilgrimage, will set off along the National Cycle Route 7 at 10am.
The whole Pilgrimage route can be accessed by public transport, car, bicycle, on foot, or, with careful planning, even wheelchair. People who are unaccustomed to walking long distances may like to meet the walkers at the end of a walk and accompany them to their destination. Accompanied children are welcome on all walks. A record of your Pilgrimage can be kept in a Pilgrimage Passport.
Subsequent day walks will visit Kilwinning, Irvine, Troon, Prestwick, Ayr, Alloway, Maybole, Crossraguel Abbey, Kirkoswald, Dailly, Barr, Barrhill, Glenluce Abbey, Mochrum and finish at Whithorn on 29th June 2013.
Finally, there will also be a walk organised over consecutive days from Whithorn back to Paisley arriving at the Abbey on Sunday 15th September 2013
All information required, downloads of walk descriptions, calendar, sponsor forms etc. may be found on the Paisley Abbey website.
