Renfrewshire Launches Graduate Internship Programme

A £2.5million programme to boost the Renfrewshire economy and combat unemployment among young people is looking to recruit the first of up to 40 graduate interns over the coming year.

Renfrewshire Council’s Invest in Renfrewshire programme is launching a graduate internship scheme.

Those eligible to apply for the internships will be graduates aged under 25 with a degree who live in Renfrewshire, and who are unemployed, or under-employed in part-time work or jobs which don’t use their education and skills.

Council and business chiefs have pledged that the paid internships will deliver high quality experience and skills development in either the public or private sectors.

“When unemployment is sustained in the years that young people would hope to be developing their careers, that can be damaging for their futures and their communities” said Councillor Roy Glen, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Employment and Economic Development task force.

“Graduate unemployment is a particular issue. That’s why one of the first priorities of the Invest in Renfrewshire programme has been to establish a high quality graduate internship programme.

“Internships have had some negative publicity in recent years with some employers exploiting young people’s commitment and enthusiasm.

“Renfrewshire’s graduate internship programme will offer practical skills, experience and individual support which will make the graduates chosen more employable in the future.

“Crucially, interns will be paid for their work whether that is in the public or private sectors. We’ve had a lot of interest from Renfrewshire firms and we will be developing a wide-ranging internship programme over the coming year.”

The first graduate intern posts under the scheme have both been offered by Renfrewshire Council. One post will be in the council’s civil contingencies service which plans for and responds to emergencies or disruption to public services.

Another post will be based in the council’s Housing and Property Services. That post will support research into 3D building information modelling (BIM) systems and the technologies which support it.

Renfrewshire’s graduate internships will be advertised online by Adopt an Intern (http://www.adoptanintern.org.uk/adopt-an-intern.html). It is expected that four new posts will go live every month. Potential applicants can visit the Adopt an Intern website and register to apply for Renfrewshire internships and to access information on the other graduate opportunities that are out there.
