On 16th June I attended the official opening of Bandekdee which houses the hill tribe children who have come down to attend school. I can report that the academic year has started and they have all settled into their new school and home with their new family. It is encouraging to see how resilient these small children are to change and how they grasp the chance of an education. A big thank you must go to Minnie who managed to secure funding from Hong Kong to enable all the children to have the correct uniforms for school.

Bann King Kaew, which was closed when I left due to the children having chicken pox, had re opened by the time I returned and all the children have come through their ordeal. The long awaited new babies arrived and, apart from one or two having to go back into hospital, they

all seem to have settled into their new home and I love having them to cuddle. I have been on a few outings with the children and one of their highlights was a trip to the local zoo.

Good news from the Burmese refugee drop-in centre ‘Dor dek’ is that some of the children had learnt enough Thai language skills to enable them to be accepted into one of the primary schools. This goes to show what a worthwhile project this is allowing the children to

be

integrated in to local societ y

thus enabling them to have an education and a chance of a future life like any local child.

Talking about education, I have enrolled in a Thai language course (which is much harder than I thought) and I am managing to pick up bits and pieces of the language to help me along.

Greig’s children at Heatfelthailand have now also returned from their summer vacation at home and settling into a new year at school. I was fortunate to go over and visit them the weekend before school started and took them each their own pencil case. We had an enjoyable afternoon and they all seem happy and settled.

I have been kept so busy with the above that I haven’t had a chance to visit the other projects that we support - we will probably do this when Andy comes out again in July and he can bring you some updated news from them. He told me Gala Day went well and that the weather managed to stay dry for the day. Thank you to all who stopped by the stall and supported our cause.

May I finish by thanking all of you for your continuous support and Twisted Willow on Prieston road for continuing to be a drop-off point for donations.
