the greenest builder in Yorkshire
The Estate & Lettings Agent
The Federation of Master Builders is urging Yorkshire homeowners to nominate their builder as the greenest builder in Yorkshire in this year’s FMB Master Builder of the Year Awards, with a £3K prize for the homeowner and a new Nissan van for the winning builder.
As the FMB launches its search for Yorkshire’s greenest builder, a new report has revealed that despite the recession, 1 in 5 homeowners would install energy efficient features to save the planet.
If you know of a great builder who has embraced energy efficiency technologies in creating your home or who has successfully completed a building project, displaying quality workmanship and excellent customer service, then enter them into the Master Builder of the Year Awards now.
If you have used a great builder, nominate them for the Master Builder of the Year Awards 2012 at

Stepping onto the property ladder brings enormous financial benefits, according to a new Barclays study. It shows that owning your home rather than renting it will save you £280,000 over 50 years in the Yorkshire region. And this doesn’t even include the value of the home you’ll own at the end of it.

financial sense too.”
While the total cost of mortgage repayments, maintenance and other costs of owning the average home would come to £429,000 over 50 years, renting a similar home over the same period would cost £623,000. Recognising that getting on the housing ladder or trading up is still a substantial barrier to many, Barclays has created a new mortgage scheme - Helpful Start ™ . This includes a Family Affordability Plan that lets parents help their children by entering into a joint mortgage with them over a property that only the child owns
The plan means parents can help their children get on or move up the property ladder without being a co-owner of the property. Both incomes
Andy Gray, Head of Mortgages at Barclays, said: “The cost of stepping on or moving up the housing ladder can be a big barrier for many, but the long term benefits hugely exceed the initial expense. Not only will you save money by becoming an owner occupier, but you will also own a substantial asset once your mortgage is paid off, providing financial security for your old age. Those who choose to rent permanently will have to pay their landlord out of their pension income, while owner- occupiers will enjoy minimal housing costs.
Steve McElroy sales director Miller Homes Yorkshire commented: “We are pleased that this research has been conducted supporting the genuine message that we have been telling prospective purchasers,” “Buying your own home is still a very viable proposition and, when compared with the cost of renting, it makes solid
The research showed that whilst renting was initially cheaper, over time home owners soon began to reap the benefits of being an owner occupier including long term financial security.
“Taking the first step onto the property ladder can often seem like a huge financial commitment and the need for large deposits has had a detrimental effect in recent years,” added Steve. “Miller Homes is committed to helping buyers with a range of purchase incentives and the recent launch of ‘NewBuy’
across our developments has seen a return to mortgages where a smaller deposit is required.”

NewBuy has been designed to help overcome the large deposit gap for many potential homebuyers by enabling them to purchase a new build property with only a small deposit of 5-10%. Lenders participating in the scheme will then provide a 90-95% loan to value mortgage for those who meet their qualifying criteria.
