DID YOU KNOW? TPC Boston is located about halfway between the site of the first U.S. Open (Newport, RI Country Club) and the first Ryder Cup site (Worcester, MA Country Club). There have been 13 major championships (and two Ryder Cups) played within 40 miles of TPC Boston. Most famously, The Country Club in Brookline, MA was the host site for the 1913 U.S. Open, won by amateur Francis Ouimet, and the 1999 Ryder Cup, where the U.S. rallied to win from a large last-day deficit. History is also evident here. The town of

Simpson, who was 26, and Keegan

Bradley, who was 25, each had two wins.

Norton was established 300 years ago this year and TPC Boston follows suit, all the way from the traditional New England stone and cedar shake shingles siding on the clubhouse to the rock walls that adorn the grounds. The Massachusetts Golf Association museum is located in the MGA Golf House along the club’s entryway, honoring such local legends as Francis Ouimet, Donald Ross, Pat Bradley and Fred Corcoran.

KEY HOLES

Chief among the changes made by Faxon and Hanse were converting the par-4 fourth from a 425-yard dogleg right into a drivable par 4 of 298 yards with a smallish green and making the par-3 16th shorter (161 yards) but bringing the peninsula green tighter behind a pond. A number of the holes are framed with stack- sodded bunkers (reduced from 102 to 52 larger bunkers), wispy fescue and rock walls to reflect the New England countryside. The course is approximately 200 yards shorter than it was originally, but also made accuracy a bigger factor. ■

How Was It Won? Webb Simpson relied on his putting to pick up his

second win of the 2011 season. ■ He was 13th in Driving Distance (310.5 yards). ■ He tied for third in Total Putts (106). ■ He was fifth in Strokes Gained-Putting (5.888). ■ He was 40th in Driving Distance (299.4 yards). ■ He tied for 44th in Driving Accuracy (62.5 percent).

■ He tied for 35th in Greens in Regulation (65.3 percent).
