ophie and Nick Wilson and their three boys lived in a three-bedroom home in a lovely area of Chelmsford, but as the boys began to grow up, it became apparent that the family needed a lot more space.
However, when the family looked into convert- ing their loft, they discovered the space did not meet their requirements. Upsizing to a bigger house was also not an option because of the high property prices in Chelmsford. They came up with a great solution as Sophie explains:
“We were determined to get the space we needed and so decided to look at similar sized homes in the neighbourhood - but only those with a loft we could actually convert!
“We worked out that buying a four bedroom home in the area would cost a few hundred thou- sand pounds more than a three bed house. So we decided to buy a similar sized house and pay for a loft conversion to give us that extra fourth bedroom. It may sound like a complicated way of doing things but in fact it all made perfect fi nancial sense!.” The Wilsons found a property that met their needs just around the corner and a year later they now have the house they wanted thanks to a spa- cious loft conversion from Econoloft.
“An extra bedroom remains the most popular reason for a loft conversion,” said Becke Livesey from Econoloft. “It’s true that having that all im- portant fourth bedroom can push a property into a totally different price bracket and in fact we have a few customers like the Wilson’s that bought a house based on the size of the attic. The family paid £27,000 in order for Econoloft to build a spacious double bedroom with en-suite facilities which provides Sophie and Nick with a lovely adult space where they can relax in a child free environment.
The boys each have their own bedroom providing them with the space to grow and entertain their friends. “Getting the space we wanted in an area we loved has not been a quick process,” said Sophie. “How- ever, it’s worked out really well for us and saved us a fortune in the long run.
