If the great British weather permits, we are sure to be out grilling in the garden in our millions this summer, continuing the boom in home entertaining and enjoying major sporting events such as the Olympics. Charcoal grills are the traditional choice
home entertaining is now booming. Not only is a barbe- cue great fun and easy on the pocket, it is also simple to make it a healthy eating option, with a balanced mix of beautifully grilled meat, fi sh and vegetables served up with fresh, tasty salads. Children love eating outside too – the novelty of paper plates, the gorgeous smells and not getting told off if they spill something!
W GET GRILLING!
If you don’t already own a barbecue, your fi rst step is to decide which type of grill is best for you. Grills are not necessarily food specifi c, but a good maxim is ‘charcoal for taste and gas for ease’.
ith two out of every three house- holds owning a barbecue, the British really have embraced BBQ culture in recent years. What’s more, as part of many families’ personal austerity measures,
and are pretty economical to buy and to fuel. They are also easily portable and so are great for taking camping, to the beach, or even the park. On the downside, they take 20 minutes to get going, but for many the taste advantages make up for the wait. Generally speaking, fi sh, burgers and steak cook and taste better over charcoal. Flavour also varies depending on the type of wood you use to make the charcoal – lumpwood is better than briquettes by far.
Alternatively, gas barbecues are easy to light and ready to cook in minutes. They are certainly better if you are catering for large numbers as the cooking time is infi nitely quicker. They are also versatile, with many offering some smart extras that may suit the inexperienced ‘griller’. Remember that you will need to connect it to a portable gas cylinder, which also needs to be stored safely.
The cost of gas barbeques has come down quite a lot in recent years, making them more widely af- fordable. In fact, gas has now become the preferred choice in the UK, accounting for 52% of all grills, with hooded BBQ’s becoming increasingly popular. There are some great online specialist retailers that are worth checking out, although most major stores will also be trying to cash in on the popularity of al fresco eating, so you should be spoilt for choice.
