Now for some ideas to help your child develop their literacy skills throughout the summer holidays:

✔ Visit your library – it’s free to join! All libraries have children’s sections. Many also have regular storytelling sessions. Get into the habit of taking your child on a regular basis so that they can discover the treasures your local library has in store for them.

✔ Over the summer holidays libraries throughout the UK run a summer reading challenge. In 2012 Story Lab will encourage children (from 4-11) to read 6 books borrowed from their local library over the summer holidays. Children who complete the challenge receive a certifi cate. They can enrol for a membership pack at your local library.

✔ If your child is particularly keen on one book, or a series of books, do let them read them over and over again. It’s great reading practice. Why don’t you encourage them to think about the characters in their favourite books and to write a short story or draw a picture of their favourite character.

✔ If you are going away on holiday, your child could create a fact fi le or scrapbook about your holiday destination. Writing about what they’ve done on holiday is not just good for their literacy skills, but creates a lasting memory of the holiday.

✔ There are some great study guides on the market for KS1 and KS2 covering a range of literacy skills. Some children may benefi t from a regular dose of school type work – either because they enjoy it or because it might help them to bridge the long gap between school terms.

✔ Try to build word play and literacy into the daily routine of family life. Singing songs in the bath, play- ing word games at mealtimes, spotting words on the walk to school, reading the recipe for making a favou- rite cake – words are all around us and by helping your child to notice them and use them constantly, you will be helping their reading and literacy skills.

✔ A great way to engage children in reading is to look for books on a subject they love for
