A bundle of extra equipment and unique paint options on the new Mazda’s

Volvo V40 starting

price confirmed Volvo has announced the starting price and a series of teaser details for its eagerly anticipated V40. The compact hatchback will start at £19,745 on the road, which eclipses the cheapest price for a VW Golf and is above the cost of a basic Audi A3, although the latter has a new range coming soon with prices to be confirmed.

The limited 6 Venture Edition Two new Mazda models have been released under the

limited edition name ‘Venture Edition’. Mid-range Mazda 2 and Mazda 6 models have been given a bundle of extra equipment and unique paint options with the aim of injecting a little extra life into them in what may be their run-out year.

The 6 Venture Edition will be even more of a company car favourite than the standard car thanks to the addition of a Sanyo TomTom sat-nav system, Bluetooth, part-leather upholstery and heated front seats.

It also gets gunmetal grey 17-inch wheels, a ‘sports’ front grille and privacy glass around the rear half of the body. Two special paint colours will be optional along with four shades from the regular 6 range.

Petrol and diesel engine options will be available, alongside hatchback and estate body styles.

It will be priced from £21,000 on the road, representing excellent value against the competition. It’s also set to be offered with special 0% and 5.9% finance deals until the end of July.

Its smaller cousin, the 2 Venture Edition, also gets the sat-nav and Bluetooth, 16-inch gunmetal grey alloy wheels and one of the optional unique paint colours, called Dolphin Grey mica.

Based on the Mazda 2 Tamura, the Venture Edition benefits from climate control in place of the 6’s upgraded part-leather seats. Other luxuries included as standard are a sports styling kit, front fog lamps, privacy glass and rear bumper sports trim.

It will be available for £12,995 on the road. Only 1,500 Mazda 2 Venture Edition cars will be built, which makes the 6 equivalent look rare but given that the 2 is Mazda’s most popular car in the UK, the 1,500 are likely to sell quickly.

Future Citroen DS styling cues uncovered

A preview of Citroen’s next DS models has been unveiled in the shape of the Numéro 9 concept, which will be presented to the world in China when the show opens in April.

To date over 200,000 DS cars have been sold worldwide, with around 25,000 of them in the UK.

Taking modified ‘shooting brake’ proportions, the Numéro 9 concept hints at the styling direction the next three DS models will take. There will be a C-segment hatchback, a D-segment saloon and an SUV.

Fuss is being made about the lengths Citroen has gone to when designing various pieces of the bodywork. The grille, for example, has been ‘sculpted in three dimensions,’ flowing into equally shapely headlights with integrated daytime running lights.

The Numéro 9 has been designed with a new hybrid drivetrain which emits, Citroen claims, just 39g/km of CO2, along with average fuel economy of 166mpg. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain allows a large overall range, with up to 30 miles able to be covered in electric-only ZEV mode.

It will also have about 290bhp and a ‘boost’ function, where the electric motors add accelerative force to the thrust given by the 1,6-litre turbocharged petrol engine. A total of 350lb.ft of torque will result - more than you get in a Porsche 911 Carrera S. Volvo V40

Using a 1.6-litre diesel engine with Volvo’s latest modifications, the V40 D2 will come with a six-speed manual gearbox and a start-stop facility to cut fuel use in traffic jams. At present it’s believed that the D2 will be the only V40 model to dip below the 100g/km mark.

Although only the starting price has been confirmed, Volvo has said there will be three trim levels for the V40, running from ES, through SE and up to SE Lux.

All models will also get a ‘high performance audio’ system with a five-inch colour display screen, climate control, alloy wheels, stability and traction control, electric windows, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, and floor mats - always handy for day-to-day use.
