draws inspiration from obscure places. I know that I’ll get weird looks on this but, one of the most inspirational quotes I’ve ever heard came from pro wrestling. That quote is from a man named CM Punk. It goes, “I refuse to let my past dictate my future. There isn’t a person on this planet that should let a past nightmare dictate or cloud their future dreams.” School was something that

didn’t exactly go smoothly for me. I would get distracted and let my social life rule my high school experience. Because of that, my grades suffered and I lost the will to get out of the hole I dug. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I got lazy but, that’s when the Continuing Ed. program stepped into my life. I was given a second chance to take the reins of my life and get back on track. But I wasn’t always so accepting of it. When I first caught wind of the program my thoughts were mixed and naive. “Night school?” I said to myself, “Isn’t that for delinquents?”

Graduate Michael Regan shares his past challenges with fellow graduates and speaks of his success in the program.

My first thoughts were close minded and stupid. Upon my arrival, I reencountered old friends, met parents trying to give their children a better future and people who were in the same slump as me. It was at that moment I realized the error on my initial thoughts and from that point, worked my tail off to get the grades and graduate.

Being here gave me a revitalized outlook and new found confidence in myself. Being able to work at my own pace and having teachers who took time to help me, where I truly needed it, was a prize winning combination in my book.

There were many points when I wanted to give up but, I can thank the support of my loving family and friends for never giving upon me. This opportunity changed my life like nothing else could possibly do and I’ll be forever thankful for that. I never would have thought I’d be here today.

Graduating high school and going to college. What exactly I’ll do after, I’ve yet to discover but one thing is for sure, my path has many branches and nothing but rewards at the end. I encourage everyone to lay out their paths. You may have an idea of what you want, but until you lay out the map, you’ll never truly see which path is best for you to achieve that goal. Second chances are a recurring theme in this speech and it’s never held truer than now. My revitalized look on life and my college acceptance are just the first etchings on my clean slate of life. I hope you all see that Continuing Ed. gave you a second chance on high school and now that it’s over, you have been given a clean slate going forward into life. So, make the most of it and etch your own story into it.

Looking out on our graduating class, I see a lot off promise in each and every one of us. We are living proof that there are such things as second chances. For whatever reason brought you here today, know that while, you may have gotten your diploma by unconventional means, you’re just as good as everyone one else. So with that said, go into your future with your head held high and know that a world of opportunity lies ahead.
